The floodlit streets of Marina Bay welcome MoneyGram Haas F1 Team for Round 18 of the 2025 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Singapore Grand Prix.
Formula 1 first ventured to Singapore, located off the tip of the Malay peninsula, in 2008. The city state broke new ground as it became the first night race in Formula 1 history, with thousands of lights illuminating a course that navigated its way past some of Singapore's most illustrious landmarks.
The challenge for teams and drivers is accentuated by the high humidity levels, meaning ice buckets are at the ready after each session, while the distorted time schedule means personnel tend to remain on a European time zone, despite Singapore being located at GMT +8.
The Marina Bay Street Circuit stretches out across 3.07 miles around the bumpy streets of the Lion City, and there are an abundance of short- and medium-speed 90-degree turns, meaning strong traction is a requisite for a quick lap. The removal of four corners in 2023 created another passing place, into turn 16, but the straights remain relatively short, meaning opportunities to overtake can be at a premium. The circuit can also lack grip off-line, while the proximity of the unforgiving walls heightens the challenge for drivers in what is typically one of the longest grands prix of the season due to the slow average lap speed.
Esteban Ocon has tackled the challenges of Singapore on six occasions through his Formula 1 career while for Oliver Bearman the upcoming weekend will be his first taste of the event.
Ayao Komatsu, Team Principal: "We know that Singapore is always a challenge but there's no reason the potential and the pace we have in the VF-25 shouldn't be demonstrated at Marina Bay. As always, we have to build our weekend up - but crucially we have to complete all our objectives from Friday through to Sunday. It's a tough weekend for the entire team contending with the heat and humidity but it's one of Formula 1's marquee events and the atmosphere is always very special in Singapore. We know these next few races ask a lot from everyone but there's still so much to fight for in terms of championship position. If we can extract the maximum in our package each time out, we should be in the mix to pick up points and improve our standing."
Ollie Bearman: "I'm excited to go to Singapore and race an F1 car around the streets there. I was at the event last year as a reserve driver and it looks like an incredible circuit. It seems like a challenging layout, and I always enjoy driving on street tracks. Hopefully we can continue to show the good form that we've had in the past few races and translate that into solid finishes on Sunday evening."
Esteban Ocon: "The Singapore Grand Prix is the toughest race of the year physically. It's always very extreme, especially in the race itself with all the humidity. It's a race I've learned to like over the years, especially with the new layout - it's great to race there. It's super intense in qualifying as well. It's one of those circuits that when you nail a great lap, it's so satisfying. So, I'm looking forward to being there. We'll see what we can get out of the VF-25 - there are some combinations of corners that I hope will suit us. It's mostly about Saturday but you can race on a Sunday there too."
