Aston Martin CEO, Andy Cowell seeks to play down talk linking Christian Horner with the Silverstone-based outfit.

With all ties to Red Bull severed, and a very, very healthy bank balance, it is inevitable that there is speculation over the future of one of the sport's most successful team bosses, Christian Horner.

From the moment he was fired by the Austrian outfit he has been linked with numerous teams, one being Aston Martin where he could potentially re-join forces with Adrian Newey, who penned title winning cars for Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

In his determination to turn Aston Martin into championship winners, owner Lawrence Stroll is assembling an impressive team, and some believe that Horner could be one of the final pieces in the jig-saw.

"I think Christian has taken some time out at the moment," said Cowell when asked about the speculation. "He's probably enjoying time with friends and family.

"He loves the sport, though," he added. "I wish him well with whatever he ends up doing in the future.

Pushed a little harder, he said: "We have got a strong team. We've got a strong team with Adrian at the helm of the technical organisation. And we're growing and building.

"I think Christian's record speaks for itself," he added. "He's a great competitor.

"I guess it's down to Christian to work out what he wants to do. He might want to walk away from the sport. He might want to do something else in the sport. But that's down to Christian, isn't it?"

Pushed even harder, Cowell refused to be diverted from the script.

"I think we've got a strong set-up and we're marching forward with that," he said. "We're a relatively young team. We've got great facilities. We're developing the tools. We've taken on strong people like Adrian and Enrico. Jack Vino on the aero side.

"There are also people internally," he continued. "There's a guy called Michael Hart that works hour by hour with Adrian on aero development. Giles Wood and so on. And with Lawrence's vision and with the sponsorship revenues that are coming in driven by Jeff, I think we've got a pretty strong team."

Still, understandably unsatisfied with Cowell's refusal to utter an outright denial, he was pushed again.

"I think I'll refer back to what I said," he said. "We've got a plan and we're marching forward. And I guess Christian needs to work out where he wants to play a part in the future. And who knows what will happen."

"Given Cowell’s emphasis on Newey (3 mentions above), reported Newey-Horner friction, a settled AM leadership team, plus the residual reputational risk, a Horner-to-AM move seems very unlikely to me.

More likely Briatore will hire Horner as head of HR. ;-)"
