Mexican motorsport federation blames Lawson for marshal incident

As the FIA investigates the incident during Sunday's Grand Prix, Mexico's motorsport federation has laid the blame squarely at Liam Lawson's door.

"Wait, the f***, oh my god, are you kidding me? Did you see that? Oh my god, dude. I could have f****** killed them, mate," said the RB driver over his radio when, after leaving the pits following his first lap clash with Lance Stroll, he encountered two marshals running across the track in Turn 1.

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing," he told reporters after the race. "I got to Turn 1 and there were two dudes just running across the track. And I nearly hit one of them.

"Honestly, it was so dangerous," he continued. "Obviously, there's been a miscommunication somewhere, but I've never experienced that before, I've only seen that in the past.

"It's pretty unacceptable," he added.

While the FIA is carrying out its own investigation of the incident, it initially claims that the marshals had been placed on standby to remove debris following the clash.

However...

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded," said the FIA in a statement, "and a double yellow flag was shown in that area. We are still investigating what occurred after that point."

However, OMDAI Sport Mexico has jumped the gun and following its own investigation issued its own statement.

"When analysing the sequence from the camera onboard the car, it can be seen that driver Liam Lawson, as he approaches Turn 1, begins to turn to take the racing line, at which point the presence of the track marshals is clearly visible as they carry out their intervention procedures to collect the pieces that had been left behind as a result of the previous contact," reads the statement.

"The proximity of the car to the work area shows that the track marshals were still active within the risky area, performing cleaning and safety tasks on the circuit. The images clearly show that driver Liam Lawson maintains the steering wheel angle of his car when taking Turn 1, without changing his trajectory, even though the track marshals were crossing the track to return to their post.

"This action occurs while personnel were still working in the area, which shows that the driver did not interrupt his line despite the obvious presence of marshals on the track."

Unconfirmed reports claim that FIA officials actually apologised to Lawson for the incident, while it was noted that the stewards, who included local official, Alfonso Oros Trigueros, saw no need to investigate the incident.

As the FIA continues its investigation it will be interesting to see how it reacts to OMDAI Sport Mexico's statement, especially as it appears to contradict the sport's governing body's handling of the situation.
