Verstappen repeats quit threat

NEWS STORY

Days after claiming that he will remain in F1, Max Verstappen appears to have had a change of heart.

"Will I stay or will I go?" sang The Clash, and that, so it would seem, appears to be the questioning playing on Max Verstappen's mind right now.

The Dutchman's change of heart isn't so much about a Sprint that saw him finish seventh, having endured a "lonely" half-hour, but more about the uncertainty over the rules moving forward.

"If it stays like this, it's going to be a long year next year, which I don't want," he told reporters, referring to the failure to agree on a 60/40 split between ICE and electric energy next year. "It's just mentally not doable for me to stay like this," he added. "Absolutely not. There's a lot of other fun things out there."

Though it the 60/40 split was recently announced it has not yet been confirmed, with a number of teams and manufacturers having expressed concern over how the split might be achieved and when, with plans for the change to take place next year now likely to be held over until 2028.

"Let's stay on the positive side," said the four-time world champion. "We are still, I think, looking towards making those changes.

"Of course, some people that maybe have a bit of advantage at the moment will try to be difficult about it, but if the FIA is strong, and also from the FOM side, they just need do it.

"I just want a good product in Formula 1," he insisted, "and that will for sure improve the product."

Though he appeared to refer to Mercedes as a stumbling block to the proposed changes, it is believed that the German manufacturer, along with Red Bull, is in favour.

"I think V. Max is being his usual “No Sh-one-T” self. He wants serious changes to make the engines drivable… then he will stay. If some of the teams are now getting cold feet on making those changes I’m right with him in saying “Get on with fixing this for $#%^&@@ Sake!”
