Pirelli concludes Suzuka test

Pirelli carried out a two-day test at Suzuka with Red Bull and Racing Bulls, unfortunately the Weather Gods were in no mood to play.

Tuesday, the first day of the Pirelli's development test programme was dedicated to wet-weather compounds. The weather forecast left no room for doubt, so the schedule was adapted to take advantage of the opportunity to run on the highly demanding circuit with the full wets and Intermediates.

Alongside the Milan-based engineers, the two teams also remained at the Japanese venue following the race weekend, taking to the track were Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson.

In the morning, with the track still wet from heavy overnight rain, both drivers tested several full wet options, including tread patterns different from those currently homologated, through a series of screening runs.

A similar programme followed in the afternoon, but this time with various Intermediate solutions, as the circuit gradually dried before another downpour brought the session to a definitive end.

Hadjar completed 69 laps for a total of 401 kilometres, while Lawson managed 65 laps covering 377 kilometres. Both of the day's fastest times were set on Intermediates, Hadjar clocked a 1:45.510, and Lawson a 1:48.025.

Wet tyres also took centre stage on the second as Hadjar continued for Red Bull and Arvin Lindblad for Racing Bulls, both testing various Intermediate and full wet options.

Although in the morning the teams were able to complete a few set‑up laps on slick, the remainder of the day was characterised by rainfall of varying intensity.

The stable wet conditions before the lunch break allowed some running on the Intermediates. It was instead necessary to wait until late afternoon, following a heavy downpour, to continue with the full wets, until the weather deteriorated further and made it impossible to carry on.

Hadjar completed 34 laps, covering 197 kilometres, while Lindblad, who went off and into the barriers at the second Degner at one point, damaging his front wing, completed 51 laps, a total of 296 kilometres.

The Red Bull driver's best time was a 1:33.'846, while the Racing Bulls driver set a best time of 1:35.490.

Pirelli's development testing programme will continue during the forthcoming break. A further wet-tyre test is scheduled for 9 and 10 April at Fiorano with Ferrari, while the following week, on 14 and 15 April, a dry-tyre test will take place at the Nürburgring, with Mercedes and McLaren.

With the exception of a few show runs, the circuit last hosted Formula 1 cars in 2020, on the occasion of the Eifel Grand Prix.
